On the surface of it, a library is a place for reading.

Unix-like systems use three permissions; 

1. *read*
2. *write*
3. *execute*

## non-machine writing

Writing is a technology, one which structures thought in a linear manner (*see* Flusser). Writing doesn't only involve alphanumeric characters.
